#51: The Illusion of Safety: Why You Stop Trusting Yourself
We live in a world that constantly tells us, “You’re safe. We’ve got you. Just trust the system.” But if that were true, why do so many of us still feel overwhelmed, anxious, hypervigilant, or shut down? Why does the body stay braced, even when nothing “dangerous” is happening?
Because the body knows something the mind has been conditioned to ignore:
Most of what we call “safety” today is not real safety. It’s an illusion… a comforting story that keeps us disconnected from our own instincts.
Modern safety asks us to hand over our protection to institutions, surveillance, and systems outside of ourselves. And while this may offer reassurance, it often leaves the nervous system feeling incomplete. Unable to finish its natural survival responses, unable to return to groundedness, unable to reclaim its own authority.
When your protection is outsourced, your body doesn’t feel safer.
It feels helpless.
It feels trapped.
It feels unfinished.
This is the root of chronic dysregulation. Not just trauma itself, but the ongoing message that your body’s natural intelligence is unnecessary, inconvenient, or even wrong.
